When Should I See a Physio vs a Chiropractor?
Choosing the right physical therapy can be confusing. We break down the differences between physiotherapy and chiropractic care to help you make an informed decision.
Patients often ask about the difference between physiotherapy and chiropractic care. Both professions aim to reduce pain and improve physical function, but the training, philosophy, and scope of practice differ in meaningful ways.
Physiotherapists in Australia complete a four-year university degree and are AHPRA-registered. Physiotherapy takes a broad approach including exercise prescription, manual therapy, pain education, and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists are also trained to screen for conditions requiring medical referral.
Chiropractors also complete university training and are regulated in Australia. Chiropractic traditionally focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system, with spinal manipulation as the primary treatment tool. Modern practice has broadened significantly.
For many common musculoskeletal presentations there is overlap between what each profession offers. Individual practitioner approach and your personal preferences are often more important than the profession itself.
You may prefer physiotherapy if you want a broader rehabilitation focus including exercise, if you prefer non-manipulative manual therapy (such as Fascial Counterstrain), if you have a complex or post-surgical presentation, or if you want someone trained to screen for conditions requiring medical referral.
